This is my presentation for “The Midlife Mojo Challenge” run by Kay Newton from 18th to 22nd November. Hope it resonates with you! 🙂
I’m Jennie Eriksen, The Midlife Reinvention Coach, and I’m passionate about helping mid-lifers create and design a business they love and live a life they deserve.
My expertise is to brainstorm ideas with clients to gain clarity and create strong foundations with a focus on knowledge and a positive growth mindset to establish a stable, sustainable business. It’s my role to support you in helping you shape and grow your business.
As a certified coach and a midlifer myself, I have a wealth of experience, and I stand by my mantra “Remember…. you’re not done yet; you’re just getting started!”
I’m here this evening to talk to you about knowledge and what I call my 5 step Dream Plan when you’re thinking of starting a new business.
Here’s a couple of interesting facts for you. Entrepreneurship used to be synonymous with being young and fresh out of college, but things are changing. The number of mid-life entrepreneurs has been rapidly growing over recent years and looks set to continue.
If you separate entrepreneurs by age group, the largest group of over 45% are over the age of 50, and bring over £119 billion to the UK economy each year.
A study last year found that entrepreneurs over the age of 55 are twice as likely to start a high growth company as entrepreneurs under the age of 35.
So let me walk you through the 5 “dream steps”:
D is for “discovery”, our starting point – this is where we are laying the foundations. Some self reflection is needed here are we look at the following two elements to gain some clarity:
Talent: What do you do best? Here we are looking at your natural talents and Skills you know you have (For example: I write well, I’m creative etc)
Passion: What do you love to do the most? List your passions – Activities that get you juiced and make you feel alive (For example: working with kids, teaching, working with animals etc.)
The combination of what you do best and what you love most is your “sweet spot”.
You can also ask yourself:
- What are my key strengths?
- Who do I most want to help?
- How do I make a difference?
- What solution do I want to provide?
- What are your VALUES? The results that matter most to you! The WHY behind what you want to do.
Ask others in your life too! Take the opportunity to brainstorm and see what you come up with!
Write a purpose statement – a reminder of what you are pursuing and why:
e.g. I will use my top talents of creativity and strategic thinking to be a marketer – the work I love to do!
I will use my top talents of coaching and money management to be a financial advisor – the job I love to do!
Know who you are before you can grow so you actually have to step on the path to realising your dream.
Ok, so you’ve established your talents and passions and you’ve found your sweet spot. You have clarity and have laid the foundations.
Now it’s time to do some research! Let’s take a look at “Who”, “Where”, “What” and “Why” and the questions you need to ask yourself:
Who do I know that can assist me/help me with some much needed information or help me with some introductions? For example who can help you with that connection to the head of the PTA who is organising the craft fair you’d like to be part of?
Where do I need to be? (What environments do you need to be in where you can learn, practice, perform and grow – online groups, networking groups, coaching, mentoring – SUPPORT)
What do I need to do/learn in order to do what I want to do? What skills do I need? What knowledge? – MINDSET)
What do I need to do to get started? Do you need premises? Supplies? Website? Support etc.
How much will it cost me? Not just the monetary cost involved but also the cost in terms of time.
How long will it take you to set up?
How do I overcome the obstacles?
AM I WILLING TO DO ALL THAT IT TAKES? Are you prepared to expend the energy, the hard work?
Or begin! This is taking the first step towards the dream – literally making a start and giving the business you’ve created your very best efforts. True action is taking the knowledge from Discovery + the plan from Research which is your starting point.
However, this is where a lot of people get stuck and the procrastination kicks in. “Are my ducks lined up in a row?” Is everything “perfect”? Well, as we know “perfect is the enemy of good” and if you’re stuck at the starting line, hesitant or scared to death to start then there’s a bit of discombobulation going on with your mindset. We’re looking for you to start now and get perfect later!
A little exercise you can try is to write down 100 reasons why you need to get started NOW.
For example: I want to make more money, I want to go on vacation, I want the freedom and flexibility to work around my children or family.
Then write 100 reasons why it will be bad for you if you don’t get started now.
For example: I won’t be able to pay my bills, I will be stuck in an unhappy dead-end job, I will have wasted all this time and effort.
This will be a GAMECHANGER for you.
The “A” in “dream” is about accomplishing what you set out to achieve. There will be plenty of forks in the road, twists and turns and unexpected obstacles. The key is to be stubborn about your goals but flexible about your methods. Building a business is a marathon not a sprint and you need to remember to celebrate and be grateful for even the smallest of victories!
Keep the focus and your foot on the gas, keep building relationships, continue to network and learn to recognise opportunities and take them!
You’re up and running and doing what you love every day. You achieved what you set out to do and funnily enough you’re back at the D of discovery as you’ll want to discover more, keep learning, doing, connecting, growing. Stay humble, be grateful!
So when will you achieve your dream?
- When you have discovered your sweet spot, discovered what you want to do.
- You have done your research and embarked on the journey.
- When you’ve started achieving your goals, and finding meaning in what you do.
- THEN, you will achieve your dream.
